Semaine de l’European Student Council
Du 2 au 5 avril se sont réunis les participants au European Student Council pour leur conférence annuelle. Le ESC est un projet d’instance de représentation des lycéens de l’Union Européenne et ses représentants – les deputies – travaillent les mois en amont sur la plateforme eTwinning pour préparer différents workshops qu’ils présenteront les uns aux autres au Parlement Européen de Strasbourg. Un programme chargé a mobilisé les élèves participants cette année, autour de la thématique de l’année, In Arte Concordia, arts et culture comme vecteurs de citoyenneté européenne. Après une ouverture de la conférence au Lieu d’Europe puis à l’École Européenne où les élèves partenaires venus de France, de Grèce, d’Espagne, du Portugal et d’Italie ont été accueillis par les familles qui allaient les héberger, ils ont, avec leurs collègues de l’École Européenne passer trois jours de workshops, de débats, de propositions autour de leurs problématiques nationales au Parlement Européen. Ils ont enfin pu récompenser l’engagement d’une personnalité dans la défense de Droits de l’Homme et de la Liberté de pensée en remettant leur prix annuel, le Malala Prize à Justyna Wydrzyńska, défenseuse du droit à l’avortement en Pologne. Au-delà des compétences citoyennes de représentation et de débat dont les deputies n’ont pas fait l’économie, l’École Européenne a également brillé à travers la réussite d’un exercice difficile, celui de l’interprétation simultanée auquel se sont donnés des élèves de la S5 à la S7, en Grec, Français, Espagnol et Italien durant les débats en session plénière qui se faisaient en anglais.
À la découverte de Paris
Le jeudi 4 avril, des élèves de S4 S5 S6 FR L3 sont parties à Paris pour visiter la ville, accompagnés de Madame Villette, Madame Weyl et Monsieur Bauré. Après un voyage en train, la visite a démarré par un passage dans les incontournables Galeries Lafayette, avec une vue imprenable du dôme. Le groupe s’est ensuite dirigé vers les jardins Palais-Royal pour profiter d’une pause-déjeuner dans le calme. L’après-midi a débuté par une balade sur la Seine en bateaux-mouches. Les élèves ont pu apercevoir la dame de fer ! La journée ayant commencé par de la pluie, elle s’est néanmoins poursuivie par un grand soleil, pour le plus grand plaisir de tout le groupe. Enfin, l’excursion s’est terminée avec une visite du musée du Louvre. Durant le parcours, nous avons pu admirer la Joconde, la Vénus de Milo et diverses autres œuvres toutes aussi historiques les unes que les autres. La journée a alors touché à sa fin et tout le monde est reparti à la gare direction Strasbourg. Ce fut une journée riche en découvertes pour les élèves, qui pour certains, ont pu découvrir Paris pour la première fois !
Sortie au Fleckenstein de la S4
Malgré la pluie, c’était avec sourire et beaucoup d’énergie que des élèves de S4 ont parcouru le château de Fleckenstein et relevé les défis qui les attendaient, avec Mme Hassler, Mme Gast et Mme Denni. Trotz der widrigen Wetterverhältnisse haben Schüler und Schülerinnen der S4 viel Geduld und Ausdauer bewiesen, um die Rätsel der Burg Fleckenstein zu lösen.
Experience at Ferme Bussiere with the P3
The children of P3 had an unforgettable experience at Ferme Bussiere, immersing themselves in a day of discovery and adventure centred around water, pollination, and frog habitats. With knowledgeable guides leading the way, they were able to better understand our water systems, observing the delicate balance of ecosystems and the vital role water plays in sustaining life and learning about the fascinating world of pollination, And when it came to frogs, they listened intently as experts shared insights into these amphibians’ habitats, watching them jump into the pond. The children developed an awareness of their surroundings and learnt the value of water and pollination through interactive exercises and immersive experiences.
Projet Kamishibaï avec les P1 FR/EN/DE
Les 3 classes de P1 ont commencé un grand projet de création de kamishibai avec l’auteur illustrateur Patrice Seiler. Il a guidé et encadré les enfants par petits groupes de 4 5 afin de fabriquer des personnages, des animaux ou des décors autour de l’histoire « Un orchestre imaginaire » se déroulant dans un musée, à partir de matériel recyclé. Après la fabrication de tous les éléments de l’histoire qui ont été mis en scène, les enfants ont appris à prendre des photos qui seront ensuite triées par l’artiste. Il choisira les plus adaptées pour les faire coïncider au texte. L’ensemble sera ensuite envoyé à l’éditeur Callicéphale qui permettra à chaque enfant d’avoir à la fin du projet son kamishibai personnel (16 planches dans un coffret et un butai en carton).Les enfants ont pris un grand plaisir à participer à ce projet.
The Model European Council
From March 26-29th 2024, the first Model European Council for Accredited European Schools (MEC-AES) took place within the premises of the European Parliament. MEC-AES is a political simulation of the European Council and the Council of the European Union, and it was proudly hosted by the European School of Strasbourg. During MEC-AES, a total of 185 participants from ES Strasbourg and other Accredited European Schools (RheinMain, Helsinki, Tallinn, The Hague, EIPACA-Manosque and Gaston Thorn-Luxembourg), as well as special guest schools (Lycée Internationale des Pontonniers and the Lycée Français de Bogotá), took upon the roles of the European Commission, the Ministers of Government of the 27 EU member states, members of the press, or as part of the Internal Media and the Logistics and Organization teams. Eight legislative proposals were presented during the council meetings. Topics such as the enlargement of the EU, FRONTEX reform, strengthening current AI legislation and combating cybercrime, regulating shell companies and tax evasion, the agricultural sector and achieving carbon neutrality, the future of EU-BRICS relations, as well as deepening cooperation on European security and defense– were some of the legislative proposals that were vigorously debated, amended, and voted upon. During the last day, an emergency debate took everyone by surprise, where participants had to quickly think on their feet while trying to find solutions to control a cyberattack on the EU’s energy grid. MEC-AES was an overall success, and it will fortunately continue to take place in the years to come. Thank you to all involved!
EES CELEBRATING MATHEMATICS
The Mathematics Department of the EES celebrated the Mathematics Week from 11 th March 2024 until 17 th March 2024. There were many events organised throughout the week: – Monday 11 th March 2024: “Elastic shapes” by Dr Guiseppe Ancona – Tuesday 12 th March 2024: Mathématiques sans Frontières Junior – Thursday 14 th March 2024: Pi day competition – Friday 15 th March 2024: “Sum of squares” by Dr Lie Fu – Saturday 16 th March 2024: Demi-finales du 38e championnat de jeux mathématiques et logiques – 12 th March – 30 th March 2024: Mathematics Exhibition by S1EN-S4EN students
Mathematics Exibition
To make mathematics a fun learning experience, students of S1EN, S2EN, S3EN and S4EN classes led by Ms Aleksic Lampert and Ms Vencatasawmy, displayed their skills in the Mathematics Exhibition, as a part of the Mathematics Week. For several weeks, students were engaged with different maths projects. Using their mathematical knowledge, artistic skills, and creativity they drew intriguing models and made posters showcasing the concepts of Tessellations, Rangoli, Symmetry and Linear Functions. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and effort especially shown by the members of the maths club “Maths is fun!”: S1EN students: Mikel, Marinos, Leire and Daelle S3EN: Maya, Christine, Terry and Daniel. Their work was highly appreciated. The Mathematics Exhibition celebrates the intersection of creativity, critical thinking, knowledge, and discovery. It is being displayed from 12 th March – 30 th March 2024 in front of Aula, for all of the visitors: students, teachers, parents to be inspired, captivated, and enlightened by the diverse creativity of young secondary school EES students.
“Sum of squares” by Dr Lie Fu
As a part of the Mathematics Week, on Friday 15 th March 2024 Professor Dr Lie Fu from IRMA (l’Institut de Recherche Mathématique Avancée), University of Strasbourg visited the EES. Dr Fu gave a lecture titled “Sum of squares” to S3EN, S4EN, S5EN and S6EN students (with Ms Aleksic Lampert and Ms Vencatasawmy). He challenged the students by asking them to think about: When can a number can be expressed as the sum of two squares, three squares, four squares? The professor inspired the students, and they altogether discover the answer using Fermat, Euler and Lagrange Theorems! This is already the second year that our students could enjoy Dr Fu’s talks in the EES during the Mathematics Week.
